EUROPEAN COMMISSION ON ANTI-CORRUPTION VISIT TO CROATIA European Commission experts on corruption prevention have spent seven days in Croatia in preparation of a report on how the country is fulfilling its European Union accession obligations. The experts visited four courts of the anti-corruption bureau USKOK and spoke with ministers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), daily Jutarnji List writes. Although the experts believed that overall Croatia continues to fulfil its obligations, it needs to speed up investigations and the processing of high-level corruption cases and war crimes. So far there have been too few verdicts in high-level corruption cases, they say. The mission was also shocked by a recent move by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Radimir Cacic who wanted to appoint Srecko Ferencak to the supervisory board of state gas transporter Janaf even Ferencak was convicted of corruption. The appointment was halted. The mission also had serious objections to the fact that politicians who are owners of companies transferred management rights to law firms, with companies continuing to do business with the state and public enterprises.
