The UNODC (Regional Project Office for SEE), Regional Co-operation Council (RCC) Secretariat, Center for Study of Democracy (CSD) and Regional Anti-corruption Initiative (RAI) Secretariat have co-organized an Inter-Regional Conference "Anti-corruption Policies and Practices in South-East Europe" on the occasion of the annual celebration of the International Anti Corruption Day.
This event took place on December 9th, 2008 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The conference was under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria. Besides the anniversary day, the purpose of the Conference was to realize a mapping exercise among all relevant actors that across the SEE region are committed in drafting and developing anti-corruption laws, policies and best practices. The Conference aimed to increase awareness of corruption and its negative impact within the institutions and to the civil society. In order to keep at high level the attention on anti-corruption matters, the Conference recalled the UN motto and will remind that it is always possible to blow the whistle to "say no to corruption". The Conference aimed to bring together members from respective (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia) National Assemblies as well as anti-corruption practitioners, representatives of civil society and international community working in the SEE region. (By resolution 58/4 of 31 October 2003, the General Assembly designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day. The comemoration of this day by all relevant anti-corruption stakeholders serves to raise public awareness against corruption.)
