The UNODC Regional Program Office for South-Eastern Europe (RPOSEE), based in Sofia, and the Regional Anti-corruption Initiative (RAI) Secretariat are co-organizing a Regional Conference on "Strengthening Regional Cooperation in South-Eastern Europe in the Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption" on December 9-10, 2009, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event has been endorsed by the Bulgarian government and will be organized under the patronage of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of the Republic of Bulgaria Mr. Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

Over the past decade, the now 38 States Parties to the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention - the 30 OECD member States and Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Estonia, Israel, Slovenia and South Africa - have implemented laws to criminalise foreign bribery and put in place policies and practices to effectively prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute this crime. But enforcement remains a challenge across the board.

"Workshop on Strengthening Regional Cooperation in Asset Recovery by Creating a Regional Network of Practitioners and Building a Platform for Exchange of Information, Experience and Good Practices" will be held from 2-4 December 2009 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event is co-organized by the joint Stolen Asset Recovery (StAR) Initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Bank, UNODC Regional Programme Office for South-Eastern Europe (RPOSEE) and the Regional Anti-corruption Initiative (RAI) Secretariat. It will also be supported by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). The Regional Conference will be hosted by the Government of Bulgaria.
